SFB Guide to Project Management Software

This guide provides an overview of the range of project management software that is available. It compares stand-alone, client-server and web-based systems and explains the advantages of using a cloud-based system. It outlines the way such software works, the benefits expected if it’s used and gives advice on selecting the right package. Spreadsheets are useful business tools and many project managers use them. They can help managers perform some of their tasks very well, but they weren’t designed as project management tools. Professionals usually consider that the use of a dedicated software application helps managers address the key stages of a project, performing more efficiently and producing better results. It must be remembered, however, that these applications are just tools. They’re as open to misuse as any other tool and it’s a poor manager that relies more on his/her software than on their own brain and management skills. Anyone considering taking on project management responsibilities would be well advised to familiarise themselves with the basic concepts of project management and there are many courses available to help them do this and, if desired, to obtain qualifications.
